Gurus (Spiritual Teachers) of India |
For millennia, India has produced some of the most profound spiritual teachers in the world. Some would even say that India's greatest export to the rest of the world is her
spirituality.
Here are a few of India's gurus that you may or may not know. Mahatma (Mahatma meaning ‘Great Soul) Gandhi was the primary leader
of India’s independence movement and also the architect of a form of non-violent civil disobedience known as Ahimsa, that would influence the world.
Quote: You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Paramahansa Yogananda was an Indian yogi and guru who introduced millions of westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi. Quote: Let my soul smile through my heart and my heart smile through my eyes, that I may scatter rich smiles in sad hearts. Sri Ramana Maharshi was probably the most famous sage of the twentieth century both in India and the rest of the
world.
He was renowned for his saintly life, for being fully realized, and for the powerful transmissions that often occurred to visitors in his presence. At age 16 he realized spontaneously and ran away to Arunachala, one of India's traditional holy sites, where he stayed for the rest of his
life.
Quote: Your own Self-realization is the greatest service you can render the world. Click to read more about Ramana
Osho aka Bhagwan Shree Rajineesh Osho never subscribed to any religious faith during his lifetime. He received "samadhi" (enlightenment in which his soul became one with the universe) on 1953-MAR-21 at the age of 21. Rajneesh obtained a masters degree in
philosophy from the University of Saugar. He taught philosophy at the University of Jabalpur for nine years and concurrently worked as a spiritual leader. In 1966, he left his teaching post and gave his full attention to teaching his sannyasins (disciples).
Quote: If we cannot create the 'new man' in the coming 20 years, then humanity has no future. The holocaust of a global suicide can only be avoided if a new kind of man can be created.
Krishnamurti, was an Indian man who questioned enlightenment. Although many considered him an "enlightened" person, Krishnamurti often referred to his state of being as the "natural state" Quote: All I can guarantee you is that as long as you are searching for happiness, you will remain unhappy.
Amma AKA The Hugging Guru Throughout her life, Mata Amritanandamayi has embraced and comforted more than 34 million people. Amma inspires, uplifts, and transforms through her embrace, her spiritual wisdom and through her global charities, known as
Embracing the World.® When asked where she gets the energy to help so many people, she answers:
Quote: "Where there is true love, anything is effortless."
While Amma is widely regarded as one of India’s foremost spiritual leaders, Amma says that her religion is love. She has never asked anyone to change their religion but only to contemplate the essential principles of their own faith and to try to live accordingly.
